"THE CURE" by THE BETRAYER.

The Cure towards the end of 1991,seem as if they might pack the whole pop
business in but now i write an article in tribute to the BEST BAND OF THE EIGHT-
TEES.
The band formed itself in 1976 with Robert Smith playing guitar,
Lol Tolhurst playing drums and Michael Dempsey on bass guitar.The band formed
after the members left school.They were temporarily joined by a vocalist and
another guitarist who left in mid 1977.
In December 1978 they released their debut single "Killing an arab".
The single was released as a one-deal with UK label SMALL WONDER.
The band signed to Chris Parry`s Fiction Records label.Parry becomes
the Easy Cure (their name at that time) manager."Killing an Arab" is reissued
but fails to chart again!.In May of 1979 the band change name to The Cure and
do an tour to coincide with the release of the debut LP "3 Imaginery Boys" which
reaches UK #44.In June off the same year,a new single "Boys Don`t Cry" is rel-
eased to good reviews but fails to chart.In November "Jumping Someone Elses
Train" is released as a single but fails to chart.The band play support to
Siouxsie And The Banshees on a uk tour and Robert joins The Banshees on stage
after their guitarist John McKay suddenly drops out.
In 1980 Dempsey leaves and is replaced by Simon Gallup.Mathieu Hartly
joins on keyboards.The next lp "17 Seconds" reaches UK #20,and their next single
"A Forest" peaks at UK #31.
In 1981 "Carnage Visors",a soundtrack for a film is made."Primary",the
new singke makes UK #43.LP "Faith" reaches UK #14.
In 1982 the LP "Pornography" reaches UK #8.Gallup leaves,followed by
Hartley.Steve Goulding joins on bass,Tolhurst switches to keyboards.Smith
joins Siouxsie and the Banshees and stays with them until 1983,when The Cure
release "The Walk" single which reaches UK #14.The group achieves biggest chart
hit with "Lovecats" which reaches UK #7 in November of 1983.
In 1984 lp "Japenese Whispers" reaches UK #26,and an extended version
reaches USA #181.The single "The Catapillar" climbs to UK #14.The band go on
tour.Smith has to cancell playing with The Banshees because of exhaustion.
"Inbetween Days" reaches UK #15,"Close To Me" reaches UK #24.LP "The Head On
The Door" reaches UK #7.
In 1986 the new line-up of The Cure-Smith,Tolhurst,Gallup(back on bass),
Porl Thompson on guitar and Boris Williams on drums.LP and video "Standing on
a beach" reaches UK #4,Video called "Staring at the sea".On July 27th ,1986
Jon Moreland,having been dumped by his girlfriend,climbs on stage at a Cure
concert in the USA and stabs himself repeatedly.The 18,000 crowd cheer him on
thinking that it was part of the show.
In 1987 the single "Why cant i be you?" reaches UK #21,Double LP "Kiss me,
kiss me,kiss me "reaches UK #6."Catch" reaches UK #27,"Just Like Heaven"
reaches UK #29.Tolhurst leave band.Roger O Donnell joins on keyboards.
In 1988 "Hot,Hot,Hot" reaches UK #45.On the 13th of August 1988,Robert
Smith and his childhood sweetheart Mary Poole get married.Gallup is best man.
1989 sees the band releasing "Disintegration" and singles released off it
include "Lullaby"(UK #17),"Lovesong"(UK #10).The Cure go on their "last" tour,
called the Prayer Tour and in August played 2 dates in Dublin.The next year
"Mixed Up" is released as a double LP with remixes of Cure singles and reaches
UK #7.The MTV show "120 Minutes" is dedicated to The Cure with Smith present-
ing it.In 1991 the line up is Smith,Gallup,Thompson,Williams and new member
Parry Belmount on keyboards."Never Enough",released from "Mixed Up" reaches
UK #9."Entreat" live Prayer Tour album is released at a budget price.
The last bit of news i have heard about The Cure is that they asked
a singer called Donavan,if they could do a cover of one of his songs called
"Season of the Witches".The Cure may end,or the may not.Only time will tell...
